Robert Half: Building Colleague Relations Promotes Job Satisfaction
(PRWEB) January 25, 2012
Who says you cannot mix business and pleasure? Good relationships with colleagues can be an excellent motivator according to a survey by finance and accounting recruitment specialist Robert Half International which found that in the US, 63% of employees think office productivity improves when colleagues are friends outside the office; 57% of managers agreed with this.
Building friendships at work is not always easy when the demands of the job leave little time to interact with peers. But forming relationships is well worth the effort. Having good friends on the job provides a social dimension to the workday and can make your job feel more enjoyable.
Pallavi Anand, Director, Robert Half Hong Kong, offers some suggestions on how to build strong friendships at work:
#1: Invite a colleague to lunch
Enjoying a meal with a coworker is a good way to get to know him or her in a more relaxed setting.
#2: Join project groups or committees
Participation in these types of activities is a great way to build your skill set and get to know other people in your department.
#3: Celebrate milestones
By recognising your coworkers birthdays with cards or decorations, you encourage camaraderie and help everyone in the office to become a little closer. Consider collaborating with others in your department to plan birthday events for colleagues.
#4: Organise a holiday potluck
Holiday potlucks are a great way to socialise with fellow employees. A brief email to the department and sign-up sheet is often all it takes to encourage employees to bring their favourite dishes to the break room and talk about their lives outside of work.
Despite the positive aspects of maintaining friendships at work, such relationships can occasionally cause problems. Here are some pointers to keep in mind when building relationships with colleagues:
#1: Avoid gossipers
Think twice before confiding in the office gossip or the boss most vocal critic.
#2: Dont go overboard with socialising
Remember that work comes first, so be mindful of how much time you spend chatting with friends in the workplace.
#3: Dont be a doormat
Friends at work should support and help one another. This doesnt mean, however, that you have to pitch-in to help a coworker at the expense of managing your own workload. Also, dont limit your assistance to your friends only; offer help to anyone who needs it.
#4: Dont be clique-y
Your favourite work friends can be a lot of fun, but remember to invite others to join the group so no one at the office feels excluded.
#5: Widen your circle
Look beyond your team or department for workplace friends. Volunteer to help with a work-related social event where you can meet new people.
When your coworkers are also your friends, you are more likely to support one another when presented with new challenges or responsibilities. After all, a deep sense of team spirit brings out the best in everyone. For more information please visit http://www.roberthalf.com.au
